Bills Sign LB Kirk Morrison

The Buffalo Bills continued to revamp their linebacking unit, signing free agent Kirk Morrison.  Buffalo agrees to a one-year deal with the six-year veteran.

It became vital that the Bills fill the void left by Reggie Torbor, who was placed on IR earlier this week and lost for the season with shoulder injury suffered in last Saturday night’s game against Denver.  Torbor’s season ended abruptly a year ago with a torn labrum.

During his six NFL seasons, Morrison’s durability has been as impressive as his defensive prowess.  The linebacker has never missed a game and was a key figure on defense for the Oakland Raiders for the first five years of his career.  He led the Raiders in tackles in four of five seasons, including a career-high 109 tackles in 2009.  Morrison is also very capable in pass coverage.  He has seven career interceptions, including a caree-best four in 2007.   Morrison spent the 2010 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being acquired from the Raiders for a fourth-round pick.

This makes the second defensive player in the offseason I had hoped the Bills would target.  The first was Nick Barnett.  I believe Morrison is an upgrade over Torbor as well as Andra Davis.  The particulars are still a bit fuzzy, as far as where Morrison will fit in schematically and how the reps will be split along with the Bills’ young backers Arthur Moats and Danny Batten.  Fellow rookies Kelvin Sheppard and Chris White have both suffered injuries during this abbreviated training camp along with Moats, so it’s good the Bills decided to cover their bases and add another linebacker to the unit.

But for the Bills to add a quality free agent linebacker so close to the regular season opener is another positive step in the right direction for the defense.
