Bills to Look for Veteran Help at the QB Spot This Summer

The Bills official web site reports today on the QB spot, pointing out that the team has just two QB’s under contract as the 2011 season approaches – starter Ryan Fitzpatrick and second-year player Levi Brown, a seventh-round pick in 2010.

The team passed on drafting a QB in the draft, and now coach Chan Gailey will likely enter the season with Fitzpatrick as the starter, that is unless the team pulls off a big deal to get a veteran that can unseat Fitz.

Gailey told the site that the team will look for some type of veteran QB this summer. “We’ll have to find a veteran free agent, or some veteran free agents,” Gailey said. “We don’t know which way we’re going in terms of whether we add one or two. We might add a veteran and a young guy or we might add two veteran guys. We’ll see how that pans out, but we have to have at least one veteran player to back up Fitz.”

GM Buddy Nix says that finding a vet to help out is going to be a priority once the NFL gets back to business – whenever that may be.

“We’re going to try to get one in free agency to be a backup,” he said. “A guy that can go in and play. He’ll compete for the job, but he’ll at least be a guy that can start a game for us and give us a chance to win.”
