Six Most Likely Draft Scenarios for Bills

We are just under four hours until Radio City Music Hall becomes all a buzz for the 2011 NFL Draft.  There is so much unpredictability going on, especially when it comes to nailing down how the top three picks are going to play out.

Here are my six most likely scenarios that will happen for the Bills when it’s their turn to pick at No.3.

Scenario #.1 –  Cam Newton goes No.1 to Carolina;  Denver takes Marcell Dareus.   The most likely way the first two picks will play out?  Not so fast.  There has been an enormous amount of pre-draft buzz that Denver is hot for Von Miller and the Broncos will scoop up the concensus best pass rusher in the draft.  But I don’t have that happening in this scenario (not yet anyway), and here Miller is prime for the taking, with Denver taking the higly instinctive, versatile Dareus.   Bills select Von Miller.

Scenario #2 –  Carolina takes Marcell Dareus, Denver nabs Von Miller.   Carolina’s pick is still very much up in the air right now.  They’ve got it narrowed down to four players:  Newton, Dareus, Patrick Peterson and A.J. Green.  Ron Rivera’s a defensive minded coach, so here I’ve got the Panthers taking Dareus and Denver selecting Miller.  That leaves the door wide open for the Bills, should they decided this is the year to select and groom their quarterback.  Bills select Cam Newton.

Scenario #3 –  Newton to Panthers; Miller goes to Broncos.  This has now become widely agreed that this scenario could very well be exactly how the first two selections go.  If that’s the case, then the Bills will have a great opportunity to begin fixing their defensive line with a versatile lineman who can play inside as a tackle or on the outside as an end.  It’s a bonus he comes from a pro-ready style defense down in Alabama.  Bills select Marcell Dareus

Scenario #4Carolina selects Newton, Denver selects Dareus.  Not much surprise in this scneario here.  I can’t see the Panthers passing on Newton.  Like it or not they’re in need of a franchise quarterback and I don’t think they fully trust in Jimmy Clausen.  Dareus fills a great need in Denver, with the Broncos going to the 4-3 defense under John Fox.  Again here we have Von Miller apparently ready to head to the stage and hold up the Bills’ No.1 draft jersey.  Doing my best Lee Corso, “not so fast, my friend!”, the Bills badly need help in the pass rushing area but GM Buddy Nix has stated a few times before that now would be the perfect time for the Bills to draft a quarterback.  For argument’s sake, I’ll take the bait and believe Nix.  Bills select Blaine Gabbert.

Scenario #5Newton to Panthers;  Miller to Broncos.   Nothing new with this one.  Panthers still believe Newton will be their difference maker and the face of the franchise, while Denver can’t pass up on the pass rushing prowess of Miller.  Now it comes down to Dareus, Gabbert and Patrick Peterson for the Bills.  My best guess is that if this happens, it’ll be down to Dareus and Peterson, putting the Bills in a difficult spot, but getting a great pick nonetheless.  I say Nix goes BPA (best player available).  If that’s the deal, then he’s landing a bayou bengal.  Bills take Patrick Peterson.

Scneario #6 –  Panthers take Von Miller.  Denver lands Marcell Dareus.   I don’t envision this happening.  I can’t recall a linebacker going No.1, but let’s just say by some chance the Panthers bypass Newton and take the guy they’ve got rated first overall on their draft board, Von Miller.  Then Denver takes Dareus.  That leaves the Bills with the pick of the litter.  Both Newton and Gabbert are available, as well as Peterson.  Even A.J. Green could come into play.  But in true Bills’ surprising fashion, they leave all four players on the board in favor of another running back and the Bills draft Mark Ingram.   This scenario was kind of just for fun, but if this happens I may just cut all and any loyalty ties I have to this team.
