Offense or Defense – What Direction Do the Bills Go in Come the Draft?

Eli Kaberon of Pro Football Weekly says that right now the biggest question about the Bills draft is if they should go offense or defense with the third overall pick.

For the Bills, the biggest draft question is simple: offense or defense? The answer isn’t so straightforward. Buffalo has needs on both sides of the ball and could use an influx of young talent at several positions. Based on their 2010 season, it would seem the bigger need is on defense, where the Bills ranked 24th in the NFL in yards allowed and 28th in points allowed. Picking third overall, the Bills could take a top-flight cornerback such as LSU’s Patrick Peterson, a pass-rushing outside ‘backer like Von Miller of Texas A&M or a versatile defensive lineman in the mold of Alabama’s Marcell Dareus.

Yet it seems the team is interested in taking an offensive player, specifically a quarterback. Head coach Chan Gailey was asked about the team’s chances of taking a QB with their first-round pick and said that the Bills would not rule out taking a player at any position, but followed that up by saying there would be no problem if Ryan Fitzpatrick was the Week One starter next fall. Bills executives dined with Auburn QB Cam Newton and his agents on March 7, the night before the Tigers’ pro day, though Gailey did not attend the workout on March 8.

  1. Dave says:

God Management – specifically you owner Mr Wilson and Coach Gailey – do not waste your #1 pick on Newton – we dont need a bench warmer and another #1 bust! We need defensive help and not in late rounds with some ok player – we need a stud like Von Miller or Peterson or the obvious choice Marcel Darius – what a moster he can be for us!

Cant you just see him pile driving Brady’s face in the field – we are sick of getting smashed around every year by the Patriots.

Take Darius and LB in second round or trade back up in the first for another defensive monster or LB. with next years 1st pick. Then early second round grab Mallet from Arkansas – that kid can throw!

Please on behalf of all Bills fans – no Scam NEWTON.
