LB Shawne Merriman Lands on IR with Achilles tendon injury, Won’t Play for Bills this Season

The Shawne Merriman era ended before it ever began as the Buffalo Bills have place the linebacker on injured reserve, ending his season.  Buffalo has also placed LB Keith Ellison on IR as well.

Buffalo claimed the 26-year-old outside linebacker on Nov.3 and the move, while curious to some, was perceived as a win-win for both parties by others.

Jettisoned by San Diego due to his problematic injuries over the past few seasons, this was the fresh start Merriman was seeking; the chance some team would want him and the chance for him to prove that when healthy, he could recapture some of that dynamic magic he displayed in his first few years coming out of Maryland.  As far as the Bills were concerned, they were looking for a player to come in, help rejuvenate a sagging, sputtering defense and help the Bills win some football games in the second half of the season.

That was the fantasy illusion.  The reality, however, is that this has turned into a lose-lose situation for all parties invovled.

Buffalo got 15 minutes of practice time for their troubles.  That’s how long Merriman’s first practice with the team lasted, until he reaggrivated an existing Achilles injury that’s plagued Merriman all year.  So essentially, the Bills spent $1.73 million on Merriman for 15 minutes.

The fact that this is how Merriman’s season has ended surely won’t bode well for him in free agency in the offseason.  In the final year of his contract, the hope was that Merriman could get healthy, show some glimpses of his former self and possibly use the Bills a spring board towards a lucrative contract from Buffalo or another team in the offseason.

Instead, now the view of Merriman could be that’s he’s damaged goods or injury prone and his best years are well behind him.  Surely this wasn’t the scenario Merriman or the Bills hoped for, but now this gives the Bills a chance to fill a much-needed roster spot with a player who can help them right now and it gives Merriman another chance to work his way back towards a clean bill of health.
