Bills Fall To Lions 14-6 In Pre-Season Finale

Many people in the NFL feel that 4 pre-season games are not necessary, and that the pre-season should be shortened. Supporters of this argument say that 4 games increases the risk of injuries for players. If you were one of the fans that saw the Bills final (and only) pre-season game in Buffalo you probably wish this game would have been cut from the schedule. And you would also assume Dick Jauron agrees with the injury concerns, as he only allowed one of his starters to play tonight, Ko Simpson.

It was a game of field goals, with only a safety by the Lions making the score look like maybe a TD was actually scored. Many felt that the Bills should have allowed Edwards to play as a final tune-up, but it was painfully obvious that Jauron was not going to risk his starters getting injured. J.P. Losman didn’t even play, with 3rd string QB Gibran Hamdan taking all of the snaps.

In reality this game was about evaluating players before the final roster cuts. One player that won’t sleep well tonight is RB Dwayne Wright. Not only did he get tackled for a safety but he also lost a fumble. With Xavier Omon having a relatively decent pre-season Wright is very much at risk of losing his position on this team. Two players that helped themselves this evening were Ashton Youboty, who tied for the team lead with 4 solo tackles and also had a sack, and Steve Johnson, the big rookie receiver out of Kentucky with 8 catches for 74 yards. Unfortunately Johnson was pretty quiet up to this point, but Youboty has been relatively productive throughout the pre-season.

After tonight’s game decisions will be made on these and other players who are hoping to make the team. Let’s hope a decision is also made to shorten the pre-season, as I’m not sure many people can sit through another game like the one seen tonight in Buffalo.
