Defense Stops Ravens as Bills Win 19-14

Lynch scores

The Bills needed a win badly to put the taste of that Dallas loss a few weeks back away once and for good.  Sunday at home they used a smash mouth defense and a solid running game from Marshawn Lynch to top the favored Ravens 19-14.  The Ravens had six drives in Bills territory, but were only able to come up with two scores, and were stopped in their final drive when QB Kyly Boller tried to pass on 4th-and-1 from the Bills 49.  The pass was out of reach of back Musa Smith, ending the Ravens final threat.

The game was marked as the return of running back Willis McGahee, who was back in Buffalo for the first time since being traded from Buffalo to Baltimore in the offseason.  He heard his share of boo’s, but was able to quiet the fans with a 46-yard scoring run in the third quarter that cut the Bills 9-0 lead to 9-7.  McGahee overall had a solid day, going for 114 yards on 19 carries.

The Ravens defense allowed three Bills scoring drives in the first half, all ending with Rian Lindell kicking field goals.  Baltimore’s offense, led by Boller filling in at QB for Steve McNair, was ugly.  In their five first half drives, they ended with four punts and a fumble.  The team’s first three drives netted them just 29 total yards.  After the Ravens cut the lead to 9-7, Buffalo came back with another Lindell field goal to make it 12-7.

Then the team used their next possession to drive from their 29 to the Ravens end zone with Lynch going over from a yard out to make it 19-7.  The big play was QB Trent Edwards going 54 yards to Lee Evans setting up the teams first touchdown on the day.  Boller hit Derrick Mason for a 15-yard score with 6:34 left, but the team stalled on their last two drives, sealing the Bills 5-point win. Buffalo improves to 2-4 on the season, while the Ravens fall to 4-3.
